The ‘Straight Outta Compton’ Red Band Trailer Is Here, And It Looks Insane

In 1988, N.W.A released their revolutionary record Straight Outta Compton. Arguably the most significant album in the history of rap music, it represented much more than most modern hip-hop does. It was a commentary on the life and times of being a young black man in the streets of South Central Los Angeles.

This August, their story will be told on the big screen across the country. Tonight, we have the first official uncensored trailer for the film. Featuring an introduction starring none other than Dr. Dre and Ice Cube (and some guest appearances by The Game and Kendrick Lamar), the trailer is a transformative explosion of action. The clip may be under four minutes, but manages to pack in footage portraying the racial tension between police and the youth of Compton, rioting in the streets, moments in the studio, and of course some crip-walking.

But most importantly, the trailer uses historical events to build a context as to why their story is important and how an hour-long, 13-track record could shock the fabric of how music can evoke the drive for social change.
